Carlo Lorenzo Vutera was born in 1966 to Sicilian parents in Brussels, Belgium. When he was only five years old, his family moved back to Italy and settled down in Vicenza, near Venice. Ten years later, Carlo came back to Brussels where he remained until 1986. He studied fine arts in college, and in 1987 he moved to New York. The following year, he started his training as an opera singer under a number of eminent vocal instructors, most notably Franco Bertacci and Tomas Lo Monaco. Working with the New York Lyrical Theater, Carlo played many walk-on parts. Aside from Italian and French, Carlo Vutera also speaks fluent English and Spanish. In 1993, he received a grant from the Singer's Foundation Development before being sponsored by H. Spielmann. In 1997 the young tenor settled in Havana, Cuba, to work with the renowned pianist and coach Pura Ortiz and the National Opera House where he sung leading roles, mainly in French and Italian operas: Alfredo in La Traviata, Turiddu in Cavalerria Rusticana, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Don Jose in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca or Arturo in Lucia Di Lammermoor. While living in Cuba for the next three years, he became more and more familiar with the musical traditions of the island. In February 2003, he took a five month sabbatical to study voice with maestro Profeta from the San Carlo theatre in Naples and also deepen his knowledge of Neapolitan songs with one of Murolo last pupils, Antonio Corbara. The similarities between the Cuban and Italian romantic traditions inspire him to make a recording combining and respecting them. He decided then to suspend his operatic career temporarily in order to record his first solo album, which reflects his love for both Italian and Cuban cultures: Ammore. Boleri Napoletani is a selection of Neapolitan love songs arranged as Cuban boleros. The album draws on the talents of top musicians like Yosvany Terry Cabrera, Dafnis Prieto, Roberto Carcasses, Descemer Bueno, and Anais Abreu. Ammore will be released in August 2004. Carlo Vutera currently lives in New York City.
